Posted by CNN on Friday, February 15, 2021 02:39:25A shooter opened fire on the Columbian State University campus early Friday morning, killing 12 people and injuring dozens more, officials said.
Authorities said they believed the attack was the work of a lone gunman who went on a rampage, leaving his car and a weapon in a nearby parking lot.
It was unclear if the gunman acted alone or with help from others.
The university announced the lockdown was lifted at 6:50 a.m. local time (1:50 p.m., ET) and asked for the public to remain in their homes until further notice.
The school was already under lockdown due to the weekend violence, and the school’s campus reopened shortly before 1 a.t.
(2 a.p.m.) after officials reopened the main campus.
President Mary Mayhew was also ordered to resign as the school has been under lockdown since Thursday night, when a gunman opened fire inside a library.
The gunman killed himself and a student before police arrived.
The student was taken to a local hospital, according to local news reports.
The shooter, who was also killed by police, was identified as a former high school student, authorities said.
A motive for the attack has not been determined, though the motive for Saturday’s rampage has been speculated to be racial profiling, as some witnesses described the man who shot him as African American.
The shooting was the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history, with more than 600 dead and more than 500 wounded.
